You:

As an engineering intern you have recently finished college, maybe gotten your first work experience and are excited as ever to learn the tools of the trade. You spend your days coding and your nights reading about code. You regularly get into heated debates with your peers about which technology, language or framework is best but you are also beginning to understand that it is typically not as simple as that and that different tools are good for different tasks.

You’ll be responsible for:
 

  • Helping us build out frontend entities on various platforms and frameworks (angular, ionic, backbone, django)
  • Writing solid and testable backend code
  • Finding smart solutions to the many real world problems we face

Successful candidates will have all or most of these qualifications: 
 

  • Show us why they are suited for this position, rather than just tell us
  • Fluent English
  • Good knowledge in at least one server based language like e.g. Java, Python, C#, PHP, Clojure or others
  • Good understanding of SQL
  • Javascript on server and client
  • Able to fit into a fun and outgoing work environment
  • Understanding of Linux/Unix

About Lynk Discover:
Every day, our professionals do jobs that are beautiful, useful, and unique. However, all of the jobs we have done to date have been inbound requests from customers. That’s why we’ve been working on a way to showcase, promote, and sell the work of our professionals. Lynk Discover is an e-commerce platform housed within the Lynk website and app, which provides an accessible method of re-selling high quality products and services produced through the Lynk Request platform.

Consultancy Activities:
Lynk has developed key pieces of the Lynk Discover product, but the Consultant will be responsible for driving launch forward in the short-term. This will include:

  • Market research: Work with existing Lynk customers and potential future customers to identify preferred methods of product presentation, design, and delivery. This will include A-B testing, focus groups, and other approaches.
  • Product Design: Work with our design team to design the product’s presentation approach, & evolve the product based on uptake and feedback from pilots.
  • Process design: Outline processes to source, test & prepare products for deployment on Lynk Discover, which can be implemented at Scale
  • Preparation for launch: Work with our existing team & workers to identify and curate initial products ready for launch.
  • (Possible) Communications & social media strategy: We know that marketing for Lynk Discover will take an organic form, harnessing the experiences of passionate users of our product – understanding social media and marketing approach will be critical to this.
  • This position requires entrepreneurial management from the start, and may transition into a fulltime role, based on the viability of the product and the quality of the consultancy.

Deliverables:

  • Market research report & hypotheses for product design
  • Lynk Discover platform v1.0 ready for launch
  • Operational guideline for all aspects of the product including - content sourcing, description, promotion, sales, delivery, staffing, etc
  • At least 50 items fully ready for launch on Lynk Discover platform

Compensation:
The consultant will be paid on a monthly basis at a fixed rate commensurate with experience.

Ideal Candidate Should Possess the Following Qualifications:

  • MBA (or related field: Social Enterprise, Human-Centered Design, etc.).
  • Entrepreneurial personality / self-starter – able to take responsibility and undertake tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Experience conducting market research, product design, and/or business modeling in Kenya.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Experience in e-commerce a plus.
  • Flexible work attitude: ability to multi-task in a fast-paced and quickly evolving work environment.

About Byld:
Byld is new product suite operating within Lynk, offering a tech-based platform to build careers for informal workers in the building and construction sector. Byld has the potential to increase the regularity of work and incomes for the millions of informal workers in the construction sector across Africa, while improving productivity for construction firms.

The initiative is born from a collaboration with the international NGO, Mercy Corps, which works in 45 countries around the world to address root causes of poverty head on, and helping those caught in crisis not only meet their immediate needs, but build a brighter future. Mercy Corps’ Social Ventures Fund is an early-stage investor in Lynk, and the initiative involves collaboration with a Mercy Corps multi-country youth employment program, which seeks to identify, incubate and scale sustainable business solutions to a range of youth unemployment challenges across Africa.

Consultancy Activities:
Lynk recently agreed on a partnership to pilot the Byld platform in both Kenya and Uganda, and is seeking a Consultant to spearhead the pilot, product development and business model. This will include:

  • Project Management: Conducting hands-on research with target users to identify pain points and product needs, and to lead the pilots on the ground through various sprints and rounds of testing.
  • Product Management: Work with developers and designers to guide product design, and evolve the product based on uptake and feedback from pilots.
  • Develop and refine the business model
  • Partnerships: Build partnerships to grow the Byld platform, supportive environment (including with Government), and user base
  • Travel to Uganda (max 20% of time) to test platform in Ugandan context
  • This position requires entrepreneurial management from the start, and may transition into a fulltime role, based on the viability of the product and the quality of the consultancy.

Deliverables:

  • Strategy for sign-up of workers including partnerships & vetting methods
  • At least one operational partnership with institute providing workers, and 300 workers enrolled into Byld platform (with Worker Sign-up team)
  • Agreements with at least two partners for onsite testing of Byld platform
  • On-site testing of Byld App v1.0 & subsequent iterations
  • Business case and business model developed
  • Partnerships pipeline including collaborative partners and potential clients

Compensation:
The consultant will be paid on a monthly basis at a fixed rate commensurate with experience.

Internship Description:
The Product Design intern will work across the Lynk portfolio of products, supporting product design. S/he will use a background in product and/or human-centered design (HCD) to enhance the way our product offering responds to customers’ needs, as well as providing a more accessible and impactful user experience for workers on the Lynk platform. Depending on background, expertise, and interests, we will create a bespoke set of projects to focus on including the launch of either Lynk Discover or Byld. This will be a highly collaborative role, partnering with Product Leads, developers, designers, engineers, and partners. 

Learning Objectives:  
The Product Design intern will gain significant experience in the design and start-up of a sustainable social enterprise, and will benefit from close mentoring from a senior leader within the Lynk team. Specific learning objectives include:

  • Human-Centered Design in practice: Hands-on experience leading design activities based on consumer insights, including using co-creation and participatory approaches.
  • Product design in a tech company: Working with developers and designers to develop product.
  • Project management: Planning, day-to-day coordination of market research activities, and stakeholder management.

Ideal Candidate should Possess the Following Qualification:

  • MBA or BA in Product Design or related field (Social Enterprise, etc)
  • Training in, or experience using Human-Centered Design approach to product and business design.
  • Entrepreneurial personality / self-starter – able to take responsibility and undertake tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Experience in management consultancy a plus.
  • Some international experience volunteering or engaging with an NGO or business would be beneficial

Internship Description:
The Market Research & Insights intern will be responsible for conducting market research across the various Lynk products, to provide insights into customer preferences, worker interests, and new opportunities. This will include A-B testing, surveys, focus groups, prototyping, co-creation, Human-Centered Design approaches, and more. This will be a highly collaborative role, partnering with Product Leads, developers, designers, engineers, and partners. Beyond providing market insights, s/he will also be involved in taking insights forward, including working with programmers and designers to adapt user interfaces, guiding business model and rollout plans.

  • Managing cash flow in and out of our accounts
  • Accounting and creating scalable accounting practices including technical integration with external accounting tools
  • Preparing reports for founders and investors
  • Helping with controlling and forecasting
  • Supporting strategic decisions
  • Supporting HR, payroll and taxes

Successful candidates will have all or most of these qualifications: 
 

  • A degree in finance, economics, law or a related field
